REUNION’s 2014 DR trip took place from August 12 through 19.
This year, our medical team served more than 450 people in two communities: La Mosca—the community the Vargas family serves, and the Santiago police force. The latter was an important opportunity to build relationships with the government as GO continues efforts to expand the medical center in Hoya del Caimito (led by Torre and Jess Aguilar, who led our medical team in the past and are now transitioning to work full time in the DR!). We also offered an adolescent women’s health workshop in Hato del Yaque, where our team dorms are located. Our construction team spent two days in La Mosca painting the exterior church wall and five houses. This was a great opportunity to connect Luis to more families in the community, and emphasize that Luis’s church a place that meets their needs. We also spent a morning hosting a field day with the kids of La Mosca—play is vital to childhood development, but in the struggle to survive, they don’t often have an opportunity to feel safe and just have fun. We also handed out 130 rainbow loom bracelets, made by REUNIONkids.
We had a great trip, and are excited to continue to grow our partnership with the Vargas family. Thank you so much for your support!
